What does SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) mean?


Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a standard protocol  utilized for the secure transmission of documents over a network system. Created by Netscape, SSL technology makes a secure link between a Web server and browser to ensure private and indispensable data transmission. SSL utilizes Transport Control Protocol (TCP) for correspondence.

In SSL, the word attachment refers to the mechanism of transferring information between a customer and server over a network.

When utilizing SSL for secure Internet transactions, a Web server needs a SSL certificate to build up a protected SSL connection. SSL encrypts network connection portions over the vehicle layer, which is a network connection component over the program layer.

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) follows an asymmetric cryptographic mechanism, in which a Web browser makes an open key and a private key. People in general key is put in an data file known as an certificate signing request (CSR). The private key is issued to the beneficiary as it were.

The objectives of SSL are: 

1. Data integrity: Data is protected from altering.

2. Data protection: Data security is ensured through a series of protocols,
including the

  • SSL Record Protocol, 
  • SSL Handshake Protocol, 
  • SSL Change CipherSpec Protocol and 
  • SSL Alert Protocol.


3. Customer server validation: The SSL protocol utilizes standard cryptographic systems to verify the customer and server.

SSL is the predecessor of Transport Layer Security (TLS), which is a cryptographic convention for secure Internet information transmission.
